Recently the Barry R. Kirshner Wildlife Sanctuary received an overwhelmingly generous contribution from the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. Under the dedicated and enthusiastic direction of State Director Shelby Zimmermen and her network of equally dedicated local chapter leaders and parents, our facility was singled out to be the recipient of a year-long fundraising project by talented young “Rainbow” girls from all over the state of California. I was fortunate to meet many of these ladies and as awed by their spirit, their drive and their commitment to purpose. If they are representative of the future of our state, we have nothing to fear.

Because of this gift, three long-range goals will be realized by the Sanctuary. We will be able to replace a van (which we have needed for several years) to transport our animals; the benefits to our off-site educational program are immeasurable. We will be able to install lighting to enhance the safety and security of out facility, our animals and our volunteers. We will get a good start on providing an animal treatment room where much-needed medical attention can be provided on-site for our animals, the vast majority of which came to us because of their special medical needs.

I would like to extend this public “thank you” to everyone at the International Order of Rainbow for Girls and urge you to consider membership for the young girls in your life (www.gorainbow.org). The training and guidance they receive in leadership, confidence and citizenship will serve them immeasurably throughout their lives.

The Chico Event Center, in partnership with the North Valley Community Foundation presents the Black and White Ball, a New Years celebration benefitting local charities, including the Barry R. Kirshner Wildlife Foundation.

Grocery Outlet is putting on a fundraiser for the Barry Kirshner Wildlife Sanctuary & Educational Center on Sunday, October 14th from 2-6 PM at Lake Oroville Golf & Event Center. Tickets are $30 in advance, or $35 at the door.
