Chuma African Leopard (Panthera pardus)
This is one of our newest residents, an African leopard named Chuma. His name means "money maker," and he is sponsored by H&R Block in Gridley.
He has become a budding actor. So far he has done the Tonight show with Jay Leno, as well as the Chelsea Lately show, and Animal Planet with Dave Salmoni being the handler for him for both shows. This leopard really enjoys traveling and is one of our ambassadors for our new facility.
Leopards are found in India, Asia, and Africa and they hunt wildebeest, impala, gazelle, hares, rodents and many other small animals. These cats drag their prey, sometimes three times their own size, up into trees to keep other animals, such as lions and hyenas, from stealing it. Leopards have very powerful limbs and necks, which enable them to carry such a heavy load. They use their long tails to balance themselves while climbing.
