Foxy Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes)

Foxy is a female Red Fox. Foxy was found by an individual, who then turned her over to Fish & Game. They brought her to us because she is not a native species to our area, and that makes her non-releasable. Foxy is approximately 4 months old born sometime in May 2009. Foxy is now a permanent resident of our sanctuary and will be a wonderful ambassador of her species for all to watch grow up and learn about. We are very lucky to have her. Foxy has a sponsor whose name is Roxy, so we call her Foxy Roxy now.

The Red Fox is a member of the (Canidae) family, and is related to wolves, coyotes, and dogs. The Red Fox is a lean mean hunting machine that’s built for speed. About 5 foot long from its nose to its bushy tail, slinky and long legged, they only weigh around 10 to 12 pounds full grown. They look heavier, but most of that is thick fluffy fur. The Red Fox has reddish-orange fur on its back and sides, and whitish fur underneath its belly and chest. Their legs and feet are black and the tip of the tail is always white.

The Red Fox is found all over North and Central America, Europe, Northern Asia and even parts of Australia. This species was brought to North America from England and released by land owners who wanted to hunt them. Red Foxes like to live in wooded areas, and brush lands. The Red Fox is cunning, shy and extremely cautious.

It is illegal to have a Red Fox in the state of California unless you are licensed!!
